It's a vestige from an ill-fated time when LMS could serve video and pictures as well as music. Don't unclick it or next time you scan your library will be empty.
BUT it also allows you to add folders to Browse Music Folder which would not be scanned. Some people use this to have a folder for their downloaded podcasts or whatever, or to "pre-listen" recordings before adding them to the main library. Stuff they don't want to have in the library, yet accessible to SB.
