The Scanner logs might help - however, if you are browsing by folder (rather than, for example, by Artist) then that is not the database that the scanner has built.
In any case - take a look at the scanner logs to see if there are any clues. You can get to the logs from the web interface Settings->Information and scroll to the bottom.
