Ok, based on the hunch indicated above I did some digging.
It turns out that two albums I ripped and imported to my media library
recently contained "supra-Latin1" characters (that is charcodes > 255)-
Code:
--------------------
PATH
NON-ASCII CHARS
/share/music/Library/10cc/How Dare You!/04 - Im Mandy Fly Me.flac
1
/share/music/Library/10cc/How Dare You!/06 - Art for Arts Sake.flac
1
/share/music/Library/10cc/How Dare You!/07 - Rock n Roll Lullaby.flac
2
/share/music/Library/10cc/How Dare You!/09 - Dont Hang Up.flac

/share/music/Library/Joe Walsh/But Seriously, Folks
3
/share/music/Library/Joe Walsh/But Seriously, Folks
/01 - Over and
Over.flac 3
/share/music/Library/Joe Walsh/But Seriously, Folks
/02 - Second Hand
Store.flac 3
/share/music/Library/Joe Walsh/But Seriously, Folks
/03 - Indian
Summer.flac 3
/share/music/Library/Joe Walsh/But Seriously, Folks
/04 - At the
Station.flac 3
/share/music/Library/Joe Walsh/But Seriously, Folks
/05 - Tomorrow.flac
3
/share/music/Library/Joe Walsh/But Seriously, Folks
/06 - Inner Tube.flac
3
/share/music/Library/Joe Walsh/But Seriously, Folks
/07 - Theme From Boat
Weirdos.flac 3
/share/music/Library/Joe Walsh/But Seriously, Folks
/08 - Lifes Been
Good.flac 4
--------------------
Having fixed the pathnames manually, I now have 244 albums with 3399
songs by 364 artists in the library, and the scanner completes in a few
seconds.
I'm going to see what I can do with the client (MediaMonkey)
auto-organise feature to avoid hitting this again, but-
- Ideally- LMS would handle Unicode in pathnames and tags fully
- Next best- Strip out Unicode characters from pathnames and tags and
index the file under the plain ASCII text
- Worst case- Skip the "bad" file, but keep scanning, and put
something helpful (like the file path) in the logs
