I had the Ickstream plugin and installed and my (unsubstantiated) theory is that it was causing an issue as the Ickstream servers were decommissioned shortly before I had my issues.
Anyway I did a dpkg -P to purge LMS and manually reinstalled and all was well. (Apart from having to set up all my plugins from scratch!)
