I'm running 7.9.2 and I'm noticing that almost every time I perform a
scan for new material, the server stops and requires a manual start from
the LMS control panel.  Is this a known issue?  I'm not finding any
evidence of this issue on the forums, but maybe I'm just not seeing it.

Check server.log and scanner.log for any hints about the problem. Some more information about your system might be helpful, too. Incl. how far the scan would go, whether it's always crashing in the same place etc.
