Could this have been Spotify accidentally including all of their curated playlists into each users favourited playlists for a short period i.e. a database issue their end?
That certainly could cause an ugly amount of traffic. But I don't think so: a few days before that I saw the call for volume changes explode... It's something odd going on somewhere.
