OK. I've managed to change locale to DE UTF8 and now get data just like your logs (e.g. content-length 418 for the top level radiotime opml response) - but everything works OK. If there was a strange byte sequence in the content of OPML reply that upset LMS - it should have failed on my duplicate setup. So it seems to me the problem is not LMS nor Raspbian but some odd interaction with network equipment. This would sort of tally given the QNAP system also fails.
