I guess you were correct. I didn't ever get any other program to flag them as corrupt (tried several existing mp3 validate/repair apps) but what I did was to use Mp3tag to eliminate the embedded artwork, then add the artwork back in from a known good jpg resized to square (previous ones were close but not quite). So in the process re-saving the jpg and then re-embedding it, now they work. I do still wish I know how they got corrupted - I generated them myself from vinyl recording via Audacity to mp3 and tagging with mp3tag. Maybe the original jpg was corrupt somehow.
