I had one other thought, which seems to point away from the ipad as the culprit here. Besides the LMS player (which i prefer for its sonic superiority) I also have Roon, which has a similar feature that lets you read pdfs stored in the folders. when I use Roon on the ipad, the pdfs display correctly.
