I assume these artists are not ONLY represented in compilation albums, with these albums showing up under only Various Artists. That is, these "missing" artists, have full albums in your collection, with either ARTIST or ALBUM ARTIST tags with their names. (and I agree, I would fully check out the tags in the "missing" files using something like "mp3tag".
