After trying various permissions fixes that I found here on the forum, I finally just did a complete uninstall and clean install of 8.0. Now everything is working fine.
One small thing, though, is that several times in starting and stopping the LMS in System Preferences, the System Preference app freezes and I have to Force Quit. Never happened to me on earlier Macs.
