I was tempted believe me but to my own astonishment I stumbled on the solution... so my faithful duo will live on for storage and the pi is scanning the files at a rate of knots..... the answer was on this screen for the share in question... I ticked the box in the Duo settings 'Set ownership and permission....' and applied it and that did the trick. Thanks to everyone for helping out.
