Why exactly, I am currently running it on my pi, but i'd like to run it on a different machine than my piCorePLayer. why is it not recommended exactly?
With the NAS you often depend on the vendor providing support or the tools build your own. Synology is the perfect example: they stopped supporting LMS about a year ago. That's it. No (easy) way to run LMS on your NAS any more.
A Pi is just more open, more flexible. And you often don't have to share the resources with other services. Many NAS have less memory than the cheapest Pi, but they're running file sharing, web server and what not on it.
