We've got a whole herd of them but we keep them in cages. More relevant, however, is that I do not like to venture too far from the beer fridge, so range is not much of an issue ;) Many thanks everybody for all the ideas. I'm liking the idea of an SB Radio best at this point as it's all ready to go, and I could see it being used around the house a lot. I'd forgotten all about them, so thanks for that. I will see what I can find. A close second is the Airplay/Chromecast speaker option. It would mean setting up another Pi with pCP but I've done a few so that is easy enough. I wasn't aware of Squeezeamp, it looks like a great option for a future DIY build, thanks. Similarly, a Pi Zero running pCp with hat DAC could work well with an active portable speaker. The physical/casing side of things would require thought and work though - "friction to the experience" is something that definitely must be avoided to keep it family-proof.
