give picoreplayer.org a try - it's linux optimized to run Squeezelite and/or LMS on a Pi.
The NAS is a bit power hungry to have on all the time, so would be looking at having my files on a USB HDD plugged into the Pi. Can that HDD be accessed via a windows PC on the same network ? ( to add new music )

I'd recommend a Pi4 with 2GB of RAM, and a good case. I'm using the popular Flirc case, as it's cooking the CPU well.
