It looks to me like LMS as I had it installed was the culprit.
*Systemctl status* reported OK, but when I opened the browser interface
it was taking up 80-100% of CPU and 70-80% of memory, and then the
output of *top* just froze. Not much of anything in the log.

I've decided to reinstall. So far so good. God help me.
