The thing is I've had it running for quite some time on 7.9.2 and
earlier, so I know it works.
It stopped working (with no info in the logs), so I upgraded to 8.2.0
but that didn't help.

I tried this. The process only lived for a few seconds before dying.
Still nothing in server.log :(
