For CLI software installs on Debian based systems apt, apt-get or aptitude are the tools to use for over twenty years now, they were developed specifically to resolve dependency problems during installs. Direct use of dpkg is only for specific use cases. in therefore don't quite understand your first comment: 'which don't yet support etc...'
