Thanks - that was the clue I needed. :-) The requests were coming from my Controller. It has been working fine so I didn't know anything was wrong, but when I dug into the settings it looks as if a firmware update had failed and the device had got itself into a strange state. Rather than spend ages trying to fix it I did a factory reset and installed the firmware again, and now all is sweetness and light - I have a nice empty server.log.
