I finally got to the bottom of this. I had to unmount the automatically mounted USB drive. (umount command) Then modify the fstab file to add a UUID command citing the UUID of the USB drive (obtained by using blkid). in thgere you give it a path to '/mnt/usb' as mine was formatted in NTFS, I had to tell the command what the format was.
I simulated a reboot and it all sprang into life. All I need to do now is check that it all remain in place when I reboot ... :) Thanks everyone for your helpful tips. It got me there in the end.
