I think that the Radio with "old" firmware will not connect to LMS 8 until LMS 8.3 when a patch was made. However, I think in that situation (where it spots LMS with a version number that it thinks is too high) the Radio would give a useful message on the screen.
Can you try to force it by going to "My Music" and telling it to use your LMS (does it show more than one)?
