So just for fun I decided to buy a record player. Nothing fancy or
expensive (I got rid of most of my records about 10 years ago), but one
that came with an USB connection. Plugged it into the Pi and using the
suggestions above it worked immediately. 

It does have a funky old-fashioned feel to it, while still streaming to
all rooms. Only thing is that now when I'm sitting on the couch
listening to music I have to get up and walk to the study (where the
player is) to turn the record every 20 minutes or so...
