Hi Michael, some months ago I also had to make the decision how to proceed after Synology stopped supporting LMS. I own a DS213air and LMS was simply not working anymore. With some help from the forum here I made the transition to RaspberryPi and piCorePlayer and I do not regret it! It is working really well and maintenance is very easy once you get used to it.
