I can't recommend one over the other, I don't have a MAC.
I use NTFS if my USB drive is going to be shared between a Windows PC and RPi. I believe that is the default format when you buy a USB drive. I use ext4 if my USB drive is going to be used on a RPi only. If used between a MAC and RPi then I thought exFAT was the best choice??? I have never used it.
