Yesterday I made the horrible mistake of updating PERL on my Synology
NAS 218+ which broke my Squeezebox (actually PicorePlayer on a Raspberry
Pi 2). I have about a 750 GB of music files on the NAS. The RPi is
connected to my stereo receiver. (The RPi is equipped with a small LCD
screen, so that I can display RU meters while music is playing.)

Anyway I spent all day yesterday trying to “point” my PicorePlayer to
the NAS, but I get different errors, depending on the settings.
Sometimes when PicorePlayer is booting up, I get “cannot mount . . .
read-only” errors, sometimes I get “you might need a sbin/mount type
helper program.”

Before I start this process again, I’m hoping to get some clarification
on what I’m actually trying to do.

For simplicity of terms, when I refer to the RPi, I’m really talking
about PicorePlayer on the RPi. Also, if this matters, my NAS is
connected to our internet directly via ethernet. My RPi connects to the
NAS via WiFi.

Also, I have consulted this web site numerous times.

https://docs.picoreplayer.org/how-to/add_network_share/

- Apparently I can still install LMS on the NAS if I use something
called Docker. But then I would still have to figure out how to stream
music to the RPi, which is connected to my stereo. (Possibly this is how
it was working before I messed everything up.) Should I install LMS on
the NAS -and- on the RPi? Or just on the NAS?

- Another question that comes up is do I need PERL on the NAS at all?
It’s currently not installed, as I was trying to downgrade to older
version of PERL so I could get things back the way they were. This was
unsuccessful because the older version of PERL would not install on the
NAS due to compatibility with DSM.

- Or do you recommend installing LMS on the RPi and just continue trying
to figure out how to “point” it to the music files on my NAS?

If LMS on the RPi is my goal, then I have some questions about Mount
Point settings in the LMS web interface. Go with NFS or CIFS? And what
the hell do I put for Share Name and User? I’ve read a lot of things
about this and I’m still not sure what to use for these settings.

I can provide screenshots of anything if it helps. Thank you guys in
advance.
