maybe the dim memory came from the fact that the touch could play local
music out of the box, with it's built in "Tiny LMS", which is limited,
out of date, and only works if you don't try to ask it to do too much.

As @ab suggested, find something, preferably energy efficient to run
LMS, put it on your LAN and let it run 24/7. A raspberry pi used to be a
real small, inexpensive solution, but now that you can't get 'em new,
second hand is allot pricier, but still a reasonable value for the
functionality you are getting.
