a) one RPI is holding LMS, only - with a harddrive attached. b) a second RPI is holding squeezelite, only - with LMS deactivated. My understanding is that LMS is not buffering any LMS data. LMS is just "organizing" that Quboz is streaming a certain track to the second RPI's IP address.
If you enable persistent mode, then LMS would proxy the data flow. The same applies if the stream was https. Streaming mode there fore does have an impact, of course. Otherwise there would be no use for it.
