I'm not sure if this is helpful, but I have used usb flashdrives, both a 128 and 256 GB, on a pi with picoreplayer for years and never had a problem. I normally leave it on full time, but I do experience a lot of power outages. The primary recommendation is to use a well established brand, my preference is a Sandisk or Samsung, but there are other good choices. If your music files will fit on a USB flash drive, then I think it is a good solution for media storage, inexpensive, compact and no cables.
