Are they supposed to automatically cycle through on there own, without clicking the now playing?
No.
What is the reason for this functionality? Just to enable views to be available to the "Noew Playing" button on the remote?
Yes, or on simple touches to the NP screen. I usually use large artwork & metadata on the 800x480 display. But every now and then switch back to the default with the smaller artwork, but volume bar.
