When you're logged in as root, you could do *su - squeezeboxserver -s /bin/bash* which will *s*witch *u*ser so that you are effectively squeezeboxserver. You can then try to do the file listings again, as that user, with its permissions. You can return to your original user (root, in your case) by entering *exit* Duet x 3, via various hi-fi.
