Using MAI, I'm guessing it's writing the artist images directly to artwork.db?
No, it stores nothing in artwork.db.
Not sure I'm following regarding storing them all in one folder and the "artist's folder", would you mind elaborating?
If you go to the MAI settings you can define folders where to store the artist pictures etc. I'd recommend you use that folder. But that would then use the artist names to store the pictures. But they usually don't vary much, so are simple to fix if needed.
