Why don't you describe your setup. Are you going through a router? Are firewall or security settings involved? It appears there is a difference between wired and wireless that the Squeezebox is detecting.
And, just to throw this on the table, are you connecting to your own wireless network? I live in a city neighborhood and there are typically between 3 and 6 strong wireless connections at my house. Since I run encryption, I've noticed that if I bring a new computer into the house it'll sometimes default to a neighbor's unencrypted connection instead of mine. If that were the case, your wired ethernet security may be too tight for Squeezenetwork but your neighbor's looser settings allow it.
