Is he using Rhapsody exclusively via SN ?
If so, he will be prompted to upgrade the firmware by pressing the
brightness button on first access attempt to Rhapsody menu.
As for the getting a Rhapsody trial expired error message - that needs
to be sorted out with Rhapsody's or SlimDevice's support
I assume you verified that the Rhapsody account name that's entered in
SN account settings is correct and has not expired.
