As far as I understand it (and I'm not a LastFM expert!) you set your SqueezeCenter to "Scrobble" to LastFM and then, based on your musical taste, LastFM will create a playlist for you that consists of music that is similar that you might like. I believe that without the subscription you're limited to the number of times it will play a particular track whereas when you subscribe you get many (or unlimited) plays. (I think)
I've found it _very_ useful as it's shown me loads of new music to buy. Which I guess is the idea since it's owned by a record co. I found the streaming a bit patchy though, sometimes it'll stop for no apparent reason and not work again for a while.
