I finally found a solution to the "nb alloc failed in slimproto" problem.
I disconnected both TP and SB3 from their respective switches, and ran them straight from the router. At first, this did not help. After a few resets/reboots, they finally each found their respective firmwares, updated and worked. They also work fine once reconnected to their respective switches. I am using brand new NetGear 8-port Gigabit ethernet switches. These are different switches than I've had in the past.
