IIRC the MLB Gameday plugin gets an RTMP URL which is then played through a variety of apps ending with mplayer.
The author of the plugin should look at BBCiPlayer. BBCiPlayer handles BBC RTMP URLs and converts them into streams which can be played directly (i.e no transcoding if Flash/mp3) - no need for other apps such as rtmpdump or mplayer.
