The only way he could have started scrolling in Favorites while playing a selection without using the back button is if he was not using a screensaver for Now Playing. IOW: Just displaying the item in Favorites and not seeing the station or artist details while playing.
It seems a simple BACK button press would resolve his issue, if setup properly, seems a trivial issue. If any Now Playing info was being displayed (station/artist info) a button press must have been performed to change the screen to immediately show his Favorites listings. No, there is no way to "toggle" between old & new server features.
