Well after a bit more tinkering around I am now connected. What seemed to do the trick was having my server with SBC turned off. I thought I must have tried this before but perhaps not? Confusingly the message on the controller reporting inability to connect says something like "Make sure that SBC is running and you are connected" which as it turns out is exactly the opposite of what you need to do!
