Since WiMP seems to be getting quite a bit of attention right now, I
thought that it might be the right time to talk about some of the
problems, too. I actually recognize three distinct but related
problems.
- Time-outs while navigating the menus.
- Time-outs while trying to start the next track.
- Invalid JSON responses.While these are most likely server-side problems, I
have been thinking
about possible work-around solutions.
The first problem is negligible when I use the Controller. Whenever I
notice the request is going to time out, I simply press the back button
and repeat the command, usually resulting in an immediate response. When
navigating with the Transporter or Boom controls, the entire interface
gets stuck while waiting for the response to time out. I was thinking
that maybe the app could be changed to imitate my approach on the
Controller: Reduce the time-out limit to about 2 seconds and then retry.
(I hope WiMP won't object.) One or two retries should be enough.
It is much the same with the second problem. My radio buffer is set to
10 seconds, so in theory, there should be enough time to get the data
for the next track in time, but it seems that the time-out interval is
even longer than that, and there is no retry. This problem is rather
annoying when listening to unknown albums and half of the tracks get
skipped without me even noticing.
I have no clue what is causing the third problem, and I guess that there
is no cure for it, because usually, retrying does not fix it.
