If you got adware it "feels" like the ISP's DNS is redirecting "http"
traffic to insert ads assuming a browser is being used.

Not good practice if that is happening.  IIRC some ISP used to required
use of their DNS service to get "free" services (e.g. Facebook) 

Alternative DNS as some users are suspicious of Google's DNS servers
tracking requests.
OpenDNS  208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220
Cloudflare  1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1
