For the buffering problem, I found that with older players (e.g. Boom
and Transporter for me), that although they worked, they struggled with
decompressing some more highly compressed flac tracks. So, I transcode
flac back to a less compressed flac on the server for those players
only.
In custom-convert.conf, i add
flc flc * xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx
# FT:{START=--skip=%t}U:{END=--until=%v}
[flac] -cs1 $START$ $END$ -- $FILE$
where xx:xx is the mac address of the player
