It's the identity you assign to yourself, and is attached to any commit you make in any repository, and kept as that is replicated/mirrored/merged around.. similar to how you set your From header when you configure your mail client... Nothing besides social interactions stops you from claiming a false identity. to prove your identity gpg signatures may be used. Regards Henrik
