IIRC the autoconf-refactor branch has some better detection logics,
but it hasn't been merged to trunk or to 3.1 yet.

layer is available. I have not built the helper with BDB 1.8.5 in ages,
only newer BDB 4.x versions.

IMO that helper is long overdue for upgrading to a newer BDB version.
