The cache will always fetch the object from one of the parent caches. I'm inside firewall and use squid-2.2.DEVEL3. My squid.conf contains: cache_peer parent1 parent 8080 0 round-robin cache_peer parent2 parent 8080 0 round-robin always_direct allow mydomain never_direct allow all I have a DNS server for mydomain inside firewall and can't resolve outside hosts because firewall blocked it. There were DNS lookups for the hosts outside mydomain and squid was blocked by dnsserver.
