A peer is declared dead when 10 TCP connections have failed. Dead TCP peers are also probed using TCP to detect when they come alive again. Squid versions up to 2.1 temporarily returns an error until a dead TCP-only peer is found to be truly dead. Squid 2.2 will handle this transparently. /Henrik
