cache effective user error with squid 2.0

Hi all,
am having trouble with squid 2.0 on RH 5.1 linux, keep getting a do not run
as root error, set cache_effective_user to squid 
I have tried this with no success, the FAQ says it can happen using nobody,
Just change the group ID.  both don't seem to work, coudl any one help me
here?
