Hi, and apologies for cross-posting :-)

This is to announce the availability of both a specification for the
new Cache Digest protocol:

  <URL:http://squid.nlanr.net/Squid/FAQ/FAQ-16.html>

and an 'open source' implementation of it written in Perl:

  <URL:http://wwwcache.ja.net/dev/perlmod/>

If you've not come across them before, Cache Digests are a new
technique enabling WWW cache servers (and other entities!) to share
summaries of the URLs which they know about. This means that servers
can be queried for cached URLs without requiring a request/response
exchange, as with most current WWW caching protocols such as the
Internet Cache Protocol (ICP). The net result is a reduction in
network traffic from cache-to-cache peering, and a reduction in
latency associated with peerings - since it's no longer necessary to
wait for responses from remote servers when processing a request.

As well as making it feasible to pool much larger numbers of cache
servers than practical using ICP, Cache Digests can also be used to
front-end other services such as mirror sites - e.g. by registering in
the mirror site's Digest every URL by which each mirrored resources
can be found, and sharing the Digest with WWW caches.

The original implementation and development work on Cache Digests was
done by NLANR, and made available in version 2 of the their open
source Squid WWW cache server:

Sayonara!

Martin
