wtmpx only exists on some versions of Unix, e.g. SCO 3.2v5.0.x, but 
not SCO3.2v4.2 or earlier.  You didn't say which version you were 
using.

The string wtmp appears nowhere within the source of 2.0P2 (you did 
not identify the version, although 2.1P? is the latest production 
version - mine is slightly out of date), nor in the Linux binary 
created from this.  There are no /etc/wtmp log entries attributable 
to squid.

Assuming SCO, could you use who -a to provide information on what is 
being logged.
