Paul,

the whole Polsih academic network uses Squid for web caching for
thousands of workstations in towns like Krakow, Poznan, Wroclaw,
Gdansk/Gdynia/Sopot or Silesian aglomeration. Check this out e.g.:

http://www.wcss.wroc.pl/webalizer-2.01-10/CACHE/usage_200304.html
http://www.pg.gda.pl/OI/w3cache/http_stat_avg.html
http://w3cache.ds.pg.gda.pl/20030731.html

13 million of requests per month (433 k per day).

If you are worry about performance - Squid isn't as good as
commercial appliances, athough you could make a cluster of
squid's installations and share clients among them e.g. using
proxy automatic configuration. Squid scales well - you could
install it virtually on any machine running Unix and take unused
resources into business.

Regards,
