A helper is a separate program helping Squid with some kind of job. In case of authentication the job of the helpers is to verify a given username+password combination towards a given backend database (Local file / LDAP / NT DOmain / PAM / etc). Each kind of backend database requires it's own helpers, and in some cases there is different flavors of helpers for the same backend database. > Is it an option when I compile Squid ? Yes, as most the helpers are shipped with the Squid sources so it is easiest to compile the helpers while you compile Squid. > Is it an external binary used by squid? Yes.
